In late December, 2011, I drove over to New Mexico to visit the Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge, one of the best winter birding sites in the Rocky Mountain region. I arrived at the refuge on the afternoon of January 2, 2012, and departed late in morning of January 6, 2012. While I was at the refuge I saw portions of more than 10,600 Sandhill Cranes, 22,000 Snow Geese, 78,000 ducks, 13 Bald Eagles, 200 Canada Geese, as well as Mule Deer, Coyotes, and many other birds. The best time to visit the refuge is mid-November through the end of February. At this time of year be prepared for extremely cold weather in the mornings before sunrise and in the afternoon at sunset. By visiting at other times of the year there are a variety of other bird species and animals to see.
